Communities

Microbial communities govern the cycling of the elements and the health and productivity of the planet.

However, communities lack any form of centralized regulatory system to coordinate the integration of metabolic functions. Instead, they self-organize through processes that are largely unknown yet lead to reproducible and robust behavior.

Over the last few years, work done within PriME has revealed some of the key processes that govern the assembly and function of microbial communities, especially those that assemble around hotspots of organic matter in the ocean.
