Bio
For the first half of my PhD, I’ve been developing a novel isotopic tool (using GC/IRMS techniques) to probe in situ mechanisms of marine particulate organic matter (POM) degradation in the environment. Through this work, I became very interested in understanding the microscale processes underpinning POM degradation from a mechanistic standpoint, so I joined the Orphan lab in 2022 to interrogate how the spatial structures and functions of microbial communities drive their activities on diatom particles. My project leverages activity-based techniques (BONCAT, isotope tracers + nanoSIMS) to investigate microbial activity at the single-cell level on particles.
